Hello everyone,
This January, Dream Havana will have its television premiere. Tuesday, January 27th at 10:00 PM, Chicago's local PBS affiliate, WTTW11 will air the documentary. WTTW has been a fixture on the Chicago cultural scene for over 50 years and we are very proud to soon be a part of that history.
Hexagram Productions, parent company of Dream Havana is currently in pre-production on the first of a series of character sketches. Filming will begin in early February and with any luck, or perhaps a lot of luck, the first portrait will be complete sometime this fall.

Take care,
Gary

Hello everyone,
I'm very pleased to announce that Dream Havana has been selected to be part of the award winning PBS series titled Voces. Now in it's second season, Voces, hosted by Edward James Olmos, takes you on a journey "deep into the heart of Latino culture". There are eight shows in the Voces series and they begin with a documentary about the great Cuban singer Celia Cruz. The series will start to air nationally on PBS this September. Check your local PBS affiliate for dates and times.

The Dream Havana DVD is available through our website. This is a new shorter version of the documentary that was created for the PBS series. In the DVD package we have included a booklet with all the poetry from the film in Spanish and English, bonus scenes from the longer version and music from the soon to be released CD. The DVD looks great and I'm happy people will be able to have some of Santana's and Mota's writings. To purchase click on the store button in the menu.

On another note, Mota has created a website where the books of Santana can be purchased. Unfortunately for those of us not fluent in Spanish, the books are only in their original language, but at least they are available and all of the money over and above the printing costs goes to Santana. Mota's website is www.atompress.com.

Take care,
Gary

May 2008

Hello everyone,
This spring has been a very active time for Dream Havana. In April we showed at the Instituto Cervantes as part of this year's Chicago Latino Film Festival. Chicago Latino Film Festival is the oldest and largest Latino Film Fest in America, so just to be included in the programming was very gratifying, but it was even more gratifying to be the winner of this year's audience award for best documentary. Following the Chicago screening we showed at one of the Landmark theaters in Washington D.C.. The screening was arranged by a PR firm called Latin VIP together with Jamie Godfrey, one of the film's editors. Latin VIP did an amazing job of PR and we both sold out the theater and attracted some great coverage in the press. May saw our first screening in Miami at the Center for Cuban Studies as well as an interview on a very well respected Miami TV show called La Mirada Indiscreta. The show, which has yet to air, is hosted by Alejandro Rios, a well known Cuban film and entertainment critic. The half hour segment was comprised of a mixture of scenes from the movie together with questions to me about the origins and process of making Dream Havana. This summer the focus will be on creating a CD of the soundtrack, publishing a bilingual book of Santana's writings, as well as releasing the DVD of the movie itself. Hope this spring, (if it ever arrives) finds you all well.

Take care,
Gary

Friday, December 7th at 8pm, Dream Havana will be showing at the Cinemark Theater in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The screening will be part of this year's Vallarta Film Festival which was founded in 2003 by Angelica and Danny Houston. Hello everyone,

The Orlando Hispanic Film Festival in conjunction with the Orlando Public Library has chosen Dream Havana as this year's featured film. The screening will take place on Thursday, September 13th at 7pm. I will be in Orlando for the Q & A that will immediately follow the film. The address of the library is 101 East Central Blvd., Orlando, Fl. and their phone is 407-835-7323. Hope to see you there.

A Letter from Havana

Starting sometime in mid-September Santana has agreed to begin a series of writings to be called "A Letter From Havana". The content and regularity will be of Santana's choosing and we will publish them on the movie's website, both in Spanish and in English. He and I are both very excited about this development as it will give him access to an entirely new audience. I will inform you as soon as the date of the first installment is decided.

May 2007

Hello everyone,

We've just returned from our screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival and I must say it was far more successful than I could have imagined. We drew a large crowd and they responded with tremendous enthusiasm. There was a Q&A following the screening and if it wasn't for the fact that the projectionist had to prepare for the next film, the discussion could have gone on the entire afternoon. To say the least, it was very gratifying and perhaps even a little surprising. This was our first show away from home turf and one never knows how one is going to be received.

Our next scheduled screening is at the University of Chicago. I've been asked by the Latin Studies Department at the University to show the film and then speak afterwards. This will be the first screening in an academic environment and I'm looking forward to seeing what the response will be. The time is going to be at 4:30 on Tuesday May 15th. I still don't have the exact address or know for certain if non University people can attend, but when I have that info, I'll post it on the site.

Take care, Gary

Review of Dream Havana screening at the Chicago International Documentary Festival

Hello everyone, Dream Havana is now in the final stages of post-production. We are waiting for a few new songs to be added and then we will do a final mix and master of the soundtrack. In addition to the music created by a team of us here in Chicago, we have recently added eight songs by Cuban composer/producer Descemer Bueno.

On the festival front we have submitted to Sundance and to the Miami International Film Festival and are awaiting their reply.

On the PR front Jorge Mota is the feature of a show called Campeones de la Raza, that will air on Telemundo in various markets around the country and I will be featured in an article in the Nuevo Herald in Miami.
